Complete Transfer Partners Guide

Every airline transfer partner for Chase, Amex, Capital One, Citi, and Bilt — with ratios, best uses, and strategy for maximizing your points on business and first class awards.

What Are Transfer Partners?

Credit card issuers like Chase, Amex, Capital One, Citi, and Bilt earn you points in their own transferable currency. Unlike fixed-value programs where each point is worth a flat 1-1.5 cents, transferable points can be moved to airline and hotel loyalty programs — and that is where the real value lives.

When you transfer points to an airline partner, those points become airline miles in that program. You can then use those miles to book award flights at rates set by the airline, not by the credit card issuer. A business class seat to Tokyo that costs $8,000 in cash might book for 60,000 miles — giving you over 13 cents per point in value, compared to the 1 cent per point you would get with cash back.

The multiplier effect is significant. Transferable points routinely deliver 2-5x more value when used for premium cabin international flights versus cash back or statement credits. This is the core principle that makes award travel worthwhile.

Transfer Ratios and Speed

Nearly all major transfer partnerships use a 1:1 ratio — meaning 1,000 credit card points become 1,000 airline miles. There are a few exceptions (noted in the tables below), but 1:1 is the standard.

Transfer speed varies by program. Most transfers are instant — points appear in your airline account within minutes. A few programs take 1-2 business days (notably some Amex transfers to certain partners). Always initiate a transfer before you are ready to book, not at the moment you find availability, since award seats can disappear quickly. AwardClaw alerts give you the lead time you need to transfer points confidently.

Chase Ultimate Rewards Partners

Chase Ultimate Rewards is the most popular transferable points currency in the US, thanks to the Sapphire lineup and strong transfer partner list. All transfers are 1:1 and most are instant.

Best Uses

  • American AAdvantage — Bilt is one of the only transferable currencies with access to American Airlines miles. Use them for partner awards on Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Etihad, and Qatar.
  • Alaska Mileage Plan — another Bilt-exclusive. Alaska has some of the best partner award sweet spots in the industry, including Cathay Pacific first class for 70,000 miles and Japan Airlines business for 60,000 miles.
  • Turkish Miles&Smiles — same cheap Star Alliance awards available through Citi and Capital One.

Rent Day Bonuses

Bilt runs "Rent Day" promotions on the first of every month, offering double or triple points on dining, travel, and other categories for that day only. On Rent Day, the Bilt card earns 6x on dining (normally 3x) and 3x on travel (normally 2x). If you time large purchases around Rent Day, your earn rate accelerates significantly.

Transfer Bonuses

Banks periodically run transfer bonus promotions that give you extra miles when you transfer points to specific partners. These bonuses typically range from 20-40% and can make a meaningful difference in how many points you need for a trip.

For example, a 30% transfer bonus from Amex to Virgin Atlantic means 100,000 Amex points become 130,000 Virgin Atlantic miles. If you need 120,000 miles for ANA business class round-trip, a 30% bonus means you only need to transfer about 93,000 Amex points instead of 120,000. That saves you 27,000 points — the equivalent of hundreds of dollars in value.

How to Stack Transfer Bonuses

  • Be patient on non-urgent bookings — if you are planning a trip 6-12 months out and do not need to book immediately, wait for a transfer bonus before moving your points. Bonuses to popular partners like Virgin Atlantic, Flying Blue, and Avianca LifeMiles happen several times per year.
  • Keep points in the bank currency — once you transfer points to an airline, you cannot move them back. Keep your points flexible in Chase, Amex, or other bank accounts until you have a specific booking in mind.
  • Watch for double dips — occasionally, an airline will run a mileage sale at the same time a bank runs a transfer bonus. If Flying Blue has a promo award to Paris for 50% off the usual mileage cost and Amex is running a 25% transfer bonus to Flying Blue, you get both discounts.
  • Use AwardClaw alerts — AwardClaw monitors active transfer bonuses and factors them into your daily award availability alerts, so you know when a bonus makes a deal even better.

Which Currency Should You Focus On?

There is no single best points currency — the right answer depends on your travel goals and spending patterns. Here is how the five major currencies compare:

CurrencyStrengthsWeaknesses
Chase URMost versatile. Strong partner list with United, Aeroplan, Virgin Atlantic, Hyatt (hotel). Easiest to earn with Freedom cards. No ANA, no Turkish, no Qatar, no AA direct access.
Amex MRWidest airline partner list. Exclusive ANA and Cathay access. Best for Asia-focused travelers. Most frequent transfer bonuses. No United. Delta transfers are low value. Some transfers take 1-2 days.
Citi TYPExclusive Qatar Avios access (QSuites). Strong Turkish and LifeMiles coverage. Good for Oneworld and Star Alliance.Smaller overall partner list. Requires Premier card for transfers from Double Cash/Custom Cash.
Capital OneWidest partner list (16+). Exclusive Qantas, Finnair, TAP access. Easy flat-rate earning on Venture X.Fewer bonus category cards. No United, no AA, no ANA direct access.
BiltEarn on rent (unique). Exclusive AA and Alaska access. Rent Day bonuses. No annual fee.Lower everyday earn rate outside rent. Must make 5 transactions/month to earn on rent.

Recommended Starting Strategy

If you are new to points and want maximum flexibility, start with Chase Ultimate Rewards. The Sapphire Preferred is the easiest premium travel card to get approved for, the Freedom Unlimited earns 1.5x on everything, and Chase's partners cover the most common sweet spots (United to Europe, Virgin Atlantic for ANA, Aeroplan for Star Alliance).

Add Amex Membership Rewards as your second currency for access to ANA direct, Cathay Pacific, and the frequent transfer bonuses. If you pay rent, the Bilt card is a no-brainer — it costs nothing and gives you points on an expense you are already paying.

For advanced travelers, Citi ThankYou unlocks Qatar QSuites (one of the best uses of points, period) and Capital One provides the widest net of partners for flexible redemption. Having accounts across multiple currencies gives you the ability to match the right points to whatever award space appears — which is exactly what AwardClaw is built to help you do.

AwardClaw scans millions of award flights daily and alerts you when premium cabin availability opens up — so you know exactly when and where to transfer your points.
